Dengue, Tolong Pergi?

STORY STARTs

Somewhere in Melaka...

Eh brader, i heard tomolo got gotong royong lar, want to go not?

Gotong royong, why?

Oh, because of the denggi lar, need to clean the housing compound so that the mosquitoes cannot breed ma!

Aiya, no need to go one, make life difficult only. Better sit and watch Malaysia Idol replay lar!

You not afraid of denggi meh?

Don't worry lar, they (government) got give fogging ma, somemore my house got mesh on windows to block aedes mosquitoes!

But...wah, look at this news, they offer prizes if we go gotong royong, got bicycles, radios and TV somemore!

Sure or not? Come let me see first...

Lucky draws at gotong-royong
MALACCA: Lucky draws offering TV sets, radios, bicycles and other prizes will be held to attract people to turn out for anti-dengue gotong-royong starting this weekend.

“We do not get many people for gotong-royong. The lucky draw is one way to draw them out,” Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam told newsmen after chairing the state executive council meeting yesterday.

Eh, not bad like this! Can go and try our luck! When is the gotong royong?

I thought you dont want to make life difficult? now want to go ar?

Aiya you really stupid lar, we go there relax only, dont really have to work! Wait till the lucky draws part, hehe...

Hmm, true also. Better get more of our people go, got bigger chance to win the TV, maybe it's flatscreen you know, haaha!

Wah you so smart this time, so better start making calls lar!

STORY ENDs

Except for the news, all the conversations are just my own imagination. Also, it had nothing to do with our fellow citizens in Melaka State, Malaysia. Sorry that i need to use "manglish", or Malaysian-English, to make this stroy more "lively". Of course, not all of us speaks like that, but Malaysian can be quite creative, sometime.

Including this lucky draws at gotong royong thingy. Gotong royong, is concept of doing things together in a community, village, housing area, etc. Normally it refers to cleaning up the housing compounds, or in this case, clearing out stagnant water in the rubbish mass, leaves, old tires, etc.

While gotong royong is just another regular community activity in most of the small villages, situation can be rather different in the cities, or bigger towns. Somehow i will feel slightly insulted, if someone would have invite me to a big clean-up because they offer prizes, not based on the fact that dengue can kill faster than AIDS, without proper medical attention. And it's our life, our housing area that they are talking about!

It's just like when i have guests at FRIM. Unless they are primary school students, usually i don't say things like "Please do not litter". Most of them would end up helping me to pick up rubbish spotted along the trails, since i am more like a "walking-dustbin" with a dustbin bag tangling around my waist whenever i brought my guest in.

Having said all, lets get ready for the gotong royong, shall we? :)

Dengue is indeed a problem getting serious in Malaysia!

Malaysians should really start looking into this matter seriously. Rather than blaming the foreign workers, shouldn't the public start thinking SOLUTIONS to face it? like better management of the quarters of immigrants, and more stringent checks on cleanliness? where is the ministry of health poeple? and where is the public support and civic-mindness?

Our tidak-apa / couldn't-bother attitude will kill us.

Malaysia needs a change. We ourselves need to change.

Was just commenting to my students while in Kyoto that Japan has little or no 'gomi' (rubbish) littered in the streets... and Bolehland has to use the so-called gotong royong to get people... plainly, it is no more gotong royong already lah, like that...

So-called Bolehland somemore, duh! I didn't see any piece on the floor, during my whole trip in Japan,Tokyo to Wazuka.
Gotong royong, like teamwork, it's a good concept, but there must be a better way to encourage this kinda concept lar :)
