Taiping*太平 Peace Initiative

Alright, actually before we finally ended up in Penang for an annual gathering, all the SCI Malaysia members (from KL, at least!) suppose to meet up Dr. Anwar Fazal et. al. in the "peace town", Taiping*太平 in Perak, my hometown state. In fact, this peaceful town is just half hour away from my little hometown, Padang Rengas*硝山.

This is a beginning of many meetings and visits to come, as we are looking into possibilities to have an international workcamps here, part of the Taiping Peace Initiative programme, started off by Dr. Anwar Fazal himself.

Meet Addision!

After a simple tea break with Dr. Anwar near the Cangkat Jering toll exits, we first take a short tour around Warisan Resort. Some 10 minutes drive away from Cangkat Jering, Warisan Resort was build literally in an orchard, owns by a local Malay in Kampung Cheh. I am pretty surprise myself to find out about this new starting point to Gunung Bubu, a 1,568m mountain well known to diehard hiker worldwide.

And how close you house can be, to river? This close! Imagine having the sound of water running down the stream accompany you as you sleep, instead of traffic building up outside of the apartment. Not to mention that green atmosphere that makes you feel like going back in time, in another world...

Even back in my hometown, i still have to cycle for 15 minutes to take a cool dip into the river. Here, it's just few steps away. So now you know that when i talk about river, this is what i have in my mind, for as far as i can remember. You can take whatever sample or pH test on it, but we only need to swim in it, to be sure!

This is, erm, where i pee!

Also, we met Fletcher and Donna, a lovely couples from Canada who now settle in Ipoh, Perak. As they are talking about Gunung Bubu hiking experience, i felt rather embarrassing, so-called local boy don't even heard about it before! I guess this is where the impact of workcamps lies, as everyone gathers at the peaceful town of Taiping.

We never really stop by the wonderful town of Taiping. Instead we drove past the town area and went straight to the Lake Garden. Here Dr. Anwar gave us a brief history of his works and thougths, including the creation of Peace Park, miniature of Peace Pole, working with local residence and universities to spread the seeds of peace.

All this, including a lecture on TOILET, in conjunction with World Toilet Day!

On the other hand, Taiping means more than just peace for Jon - - it means ferns! Varies fern species are spotted all over the Lake Garden, espcially crawling all over some big old rain trees. As usual, given to opportunity and permisson (guess who?:P), Jon would loved to "adopt" a fern or two.

Tree ferns must be the real ultimate "adoption" for Jon. But hey, you might need to ask your missus to walk home afterwards, haha! Anyway i found it hardly amused as i sat back into the car: Jon, Ros, Kim and me on board. Now, who will be walking afterwards? :)

One last shot before we finally on our way to Penang (for real!).

I like this greenery view, certainly look peaceful enough for me. And if you think green is just ONE colour, look carefully again. Likewise, peace may come in many forms. There is much for us to do to promote peace among human, mother nature and universe as a whole.

But for now, i wish to have a peace journey!

That house reminds me of staying at a place on Maui that was a on a triangular piece of land. The ocean was on one side, and a stream on another. The sound of waves on the rock beach, the stream burbling over rocks, and rain on the roof, combined to insure a wonderful night's sleep.

Peace. So elusive. I wish anyone well who pursues it with a sincere heart.

Was told that Taiping has not changed over the years but didn't expect it to be quite so interesting as what you've posted, Low. You, my friend, are helping Malaysia promote the country. Attaboy!!

Taiping! where 2 of my current housemates come from, and where a bunch of great friends come from!

I have always wanted to buy a house in Taiping for my parents, or for myself when i grow old, for its serenity and peace. As Happysurfer said, it has not changed over time, and i love this fact!

hehe.. for kayak-kaki fh20 who get excited whenever he is near water, taiping does offer lots of it, in forms of rain! :0)

I suppose you'll probably have sleepless night if you stay in that hut, hehe! Too close to the water, haha!

Sounds like heaven for me like like the spacious sea, but not the salty water. Like cool refreshing river but lack of space. I could just just alternate between the both world in the same time, how nice! Let's Maui sometime :)

Taiping is changing, slowly. More highways now, food stalls in Larut Matang are changing "person-in-charge", some young ones' just couldn't get the taste right. And i suppose you know i've just posted a small fraction of the wonderful town! I'll go back in coming chinese new year for more! :p

Of course, some changed, some stayed. Keep the forest, and the rain is there! Forever!

I hope i am promoting peace and understand among Malaysian, Malaysia and the rest of the world. All in all we live in the same earth, if only that we can be a little less selfish...

Welcome back, my friend :)

Seems like Taiping is the hotspots for everyone up north! I knew someone who actually choose to settle in Taiping, so nice idea you have there! I will grow old in a place some half hour away from Taiping, though :p

There are some peace organizations in KL, but i must say everyone have their own agenda. It's our hope that the real peace initiative will start in Taiping, the everlasting peace town itself.

Water is good, but all that green is even better!

I guess the two do go hand-in-hand, don't they?

So do the gray, cloudy skies, which I don't mind at all. I've always actually kind of liked gray, rainy days (as long as it's not too cold). I suppose that's a symptom of having been born on the Oregon Coast (one of the rainiest places in the continental U.S.). There's something kind of sentimental, romantic, even moody about a rainy day. It suits me perfectly.

There is, however, a place in Taiping that did not leave quite a good memory for me.

We went to the Taiping Hill when i was very young. The experience was spooky and we (including adults) somehow felt a sense of spookiness and haunting feeling.

I remembered i was feeling very uneasy while my younger cousins are crying for no apparent reasons.. We haven't been back there again. I wonder whether i will set foot on it again, now that i m grown up. perhaps i need to face this little phobia. :-)

There are places that just seem to feel spooky for some reason, YD. For example, there's an area in Washington (state) that the Native Americans (i.e. Indians) were scared to death of and wouldn't go near. Now it's a dam reservoir, but it's creepy. People that go there tend to feel like they're being watched. My dad (a total skeptic) and my uncle (mostly a skeptic) went fishing there once, and they both suddenly felt ill. They quickly got better as soon as they left.

(Yes, Pandabonium, I know...southwest Wasington. All that secretly buried nuclear waste from the Hanford project...)

Oh actually i wouldn't want to mention it. But since you did...

Spooky as hell, yes. I once stayed overnight uphill when i'm still in highschool. We thought we heard "something" is dragging a chained-link on the cement floor, to the grass, off into the woods...And the bathroom, 3 steps down from our room level. So big that your both eye can't covers all the angles...now that's ain't funny!

They always said small kids and someone who's dying can see those "things". Also said, if you don't disturb "them", they will leave you alone! So be good and don't worry? :p

Moody...
Well, at least they got better after leaving the place. "Some" follows you back! *touch wood*

Funny thing is, most of the so-called spooky or haunted place are pre-occupied or visited by human. If the "don't mess with us, else we will mess with you" theory goes well, we are actually facing our own karma!

I heard about nuke test in some islands, now secretly buried nuke waste? I wonder what's the environmental and social impact like. Must be extraordinary.
